When I was in employment (now retired) I always turned the washing machine on when I left for work. After retirement I turned it on when going out shopping etc.
A couple of months ago the machine made a loud bang, on investigating the noise the kitchen was full of black smoke yet the machine was still working.
I dread to think what could have happened had I not been there. So ABers think about what you allow to run while you are out.

not daft at all ----- very sensible
The only thing I won't leave on when I'm out is the tumble drier, I've never 'trusted' it and only use it to air underwear (I don't think it will catch fire, it just doesn't seem to know when to switch off and I am too tight to waste money on it going round and round when it doesn't need to).
It's not a daft thing to say at all, it's true! My friend put her dishwasher on going to bed. She was wakened by smoke and ran down to the kitchen. The dishwasher was on fire and sadly her two dogs, who slept in the kitchen, died in the fire.
I have always switched off dishwashers and washing machines when I go out or go to bed.
I think it's good to say, I wouldn't leave anything running while I'm out of the house, except my crockpot
I leave numerous computers running, routers, alarm clocks, dishwasher washing machine, TVs, digi boxes, compressors, freezers, fridges, dehumidifiers and god knows how many chargers plugged in.

If I was to go around switching everything off and then off again it would take me an age to leave the house:-(
It's a very sensible thing to say. I find it difficult, because we are all in and out a lot and the washing/drying is fairly constant. I think tumble dryers are the highest fire risk.
Reminds me a bit of a comedian (Dara O'Briain?)- switch everything off - except the fridge freezer. We all trust those!
Pixie, we all trust the fridge freezer, nut in recent times hasn't it cause a lot of housefires, the Beko brand I'm thinking of

Every single thing is turned off when i leave the house!
Definately not washing machine, as my Mr Puss's cousin left hers on and hey, it caught fire and took a long time to get rid of black smoke and damage.
the N was too near the B on qwerty ha^^^
I admit I stupidly still do it even though I once put some washing on, went out for the day and came home to find the whole downstairs flooded.
We never think of fridge or freezer do we. lol. They could catch fire too, especially while away on a holiday for a week or so. Crikey.

nit of a noon there, ducksie? ;-)
there was a bit of a boob there Excelsior :} only slight one ha

What really bothered me at the time was, had I been out Mic would have............ I don't know, I dread to think.
Horrifying thought jeza. it pays to be safe doesnt it.
I used to put the washing machine on overnight on economy7. I woke up one morning, got out of bed and my feet hit 2" of water. I lived in a bungalow at the time. The whole of the house was flooded. After I set the machine in motion and went to bed, Severn Trent decided to turn the water off for repairs to the system. The ingoing water only had chance to wet the soap powder not wash it through. This mass set solid like concrete. When the water came back on later on, the water couldn't get into the machine, it just poured out onto the floor. This must have been going on for hours. It took about three months for everything to dry out. It was awful.
I have had another two floodings due to washing machine since then at the house where I am now. They were twice as bad as the first.
We dont turn anything off, my computer hasnt been turned off for months except when I moved house. The tumble dryer is often on when we are out.

Not something I worry about at all.
