Many of my friends secured permanent positions through agencies. GOOD agencies work hard for you, and save you a lot of bother. Contacting companies directly is an approach that works for some people, but if you then try to go to agencies, it gets very complicated and you can end up shooting yourself in the foot.
spaceyangel - do you want office/factory or catering work? There are very different agencies for each, although some, like Blue Arrow (don't touch with a bargepole though, imo) cover all three. Also, where are you? There are local as well as national agencies.
I cannot recommend highly enough Office Angels -got me a month's work within 2 working hours. Oh, and I got 30 travel pay this week, even though I get a lift in with my Mum and we only live 3 miles from work!!!
Also Berkley Scott catering get loads of really good stuff. Through them I worked at the U2 and REM gigs, and the Ashes test in Manchester this summer.
Both agencies pay well.
