Fed Up - time for a career change..

Hiya, does anyone else feel like it is time to make a drastic career change?  I have been in the same job for 5 yrs and I am bored.  I want to make a drastic change and do something completely different, but worried about making enough money for one thing, but also not sure what to do instead.  I feel stuck in a rut.  Any tips?

i am sure there are a lot of others out there feeling the same.  especially on a monday!

a good place to start is to search college evening courses to get get a taster of something that interests you.  if you like the feel of something, it can be a good indicatior of future career changes.  good luck

Well one option is to make a job out of a hobby.

So if you say enjoy working with computers at home, then get some training or certification, and then help people in your spare time, then build it up to a job.

To be honest any hobby or skill can be developed into a job, just start small and perhaps do it in the evenings or weekends, then once you have the required experience and contacts turn your hobby into your job.

Of course one other option is to try to expand or develop the job you have. 

I do not know what you do, or where you work, but most managers appreciate an employee coming to them and saying they are in a rut and are looking for a new challange.

Maybe there is a new project or opening in your company and they are looking for some new people to work on it. 

You will never know if you dont ask.

hi, i felt exactly the same as you and now i couldnt be happier. i worked in retail for 6 years, worked my way up to be a manager and the money was brilliant but i wasnt that happy. i have always wanted to work with children and one day i just snapped and thought if i dont do it now then i never will! i handed my notice in took a two week holiday and started searching for jobs in a nursery. i rang around to see if anywhere had any jobs available for unqualified people and if they would train up. One place said yes and i got an interview. I got the job and they put me on a NVQ course in childcare and went from there. I was training for a new career but still had the money coming in.

The money was no way near as good but i was getting a qualification out of it!

I look at it as side stepping not dropping down a wage. It was one of the scariest things i have done in my life but one of the best. I couldnt be happier. My advice is follow your dreams look at what your good at and what you always wanted to do. It will all turn out well in the long run if you apply yourself to it.......i did!!!!

If you enjoy the actual work you do, but are just bored with the monotony, try delving into a new hobby or activity. If you don't like the job you do, try taking evening classes at your local college if you can afford to, doing something that could help you change your career. Then post yourself on the internet job sites and find something new using that knowledge.  Good luck.
