Individual Work Or Team Work?

At uni we are given a task to make a presentation in a group or write an essay individually. I hate relying on other people so I chose essay but our lecturer insisted that I try group presentation. For our first deadline, I was the only person who did all of the planning and chose references, and still my group just sit there saying oh yes we'll read the stuff you found and never do anything or even give their opinion. I spoke to the lecturer today he said 'Well you need to manage them cos that's teamwork. But you can still take the essay!'.
Should I take the essay? It's almost the same amount of work I just don't have to babysit irresponsible people and fail because they don't care? Most importantly, what do I say to them just so they don't get hurt or offended?

Just tell them that as you feel that you were doing all the work for the group presentation it would actually suit you better to complete and essay rather than continue to work in the group. you will, of course, leave them with copies of the work you have done so far. Having said that it actually may well do you a favour to continue to work with them so that you learn how to work as part of a team because you probably will be expected to do that when you start work. Also it may be worth considering how you worked with them or if you just took over and told the others what to do. Think carefully about your own behaviour...I say this as someone who prefers to get on with tasks in hand on my own rather than collaborate with others.
do the essay, might as well concentrate on what you're good at. "Managing" people isn't teamwork, it's leadership, which is a different matter.
Yes there is no time to waste in life. No use helping people. So take the plunge. And do it yourself. No harm in it.
Both my kids have been plagued with being grouped with lazy teamsters for school/uni. Go for the essay and save yourself the grief.
Team leadership.

Look; both are good experience for the future, and if you do most, chances are you gain most. But it's your decision. If you think they'd just hold you back, opt out now before you spend more time on the team situation.
I would tell the folk in your team they had the opportunity to work with you but for whatever reason, they did not want to take advantage of that.

They should not benefit from your work so I would not let them use it. Go for the essay option.
