Who here has the honour of working on Christmas Day?!?!?! I have been bestowed that honour this year and have a lovely 11-5 shift ahead of me! I think i am on double time but does anyone know if this is compulsory or just an incentive?

I'm working Christmas day too :0( My job is in the hospitality business so I have to make sure everyone else enjoys themselves..... Bah

I don't think it's compulsary as it isn't deemed a Bank Holiday this year with it landing on a weekend

I'm not working Christmas Day, but I used to. One year I got the pleasure of working Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year's Eve and New Year's Day - all until 11pm. Lovely.

The only good thing about it was the great atmosphere - everyone was happy for once!

No its not compulsory for any firm to pay double time or a day of in lieu, its all down to the company and their good will gestures. Yes I know it should be made legal for double time etc. I have also worked christmas time and new year. But this year I'm off. Whatever job you are in try and have a good time. I work within the rail industry. Most bank holidays effectively don't exist for us as they're always worked on a 'normal day, normal pay' basis. Christmas Day and Boxing Day are the only bank holidays which we get, simply because there are no rail services.

In the past, I've worked in various pubs on Christmas Day. The pay has varied from 'normal' to 'double time'. (I've never let on that I'd happily work for free on Christmas Day. It's always much more fun than watching the Queen's speech!).

im a veterinary nurse and have a 12 hour shift to work on xmas day , but i do have a great fiance bringing me xmas dinner! (only 4.5 hours to go!)

I didn't work as such but it felt like I did!! Like most people, dealing with relatives and cooking certainly doesn't feel like holiday!! I had my folks round in the morning, and was up at 6am cooking, and then went to my friends who are divorcing in the afternoon. Was not an altogether easy ride!!!

I had the "honour" of working Christmas day, 7-2 a a patrol constable. A policemans lot is not a happy one.
