Basically, you can't walk into a salon and start cutting peoples hair, you do need to train. I did my training through an NVQ programme at college. The college itself had a salon which we would spend most of our time in, working on models. We also did a lot theory work, mainly chemistry. You can train to be a hairdresser without going to college, but many salon owners don't have the time/inclination to provide effecient training so you may find yourself a trainee for longer then you need to. I guess general qualifications would be at the discretion of a salon owner but colleges do require a minimum amount of GCSE grades for entry. Contact your nearest college and salons to find out some information on what you need to do.
