Whats the first step to becoming a midwife

I am 30 years old with absoloutely no nursing experience, I have wanted to be midwife for many years but have kept putting it off and trudging along in worthless boring jobs instead as the need to help support my family has been greater in the past few years. I have now decided that I definitely want to pursue a carrer in midwifery if I am eligible and I have no idea who to contact or how to go about it. I realise you need to study for a bout 3 years but are there any midwives out there who could advise?? thanks
