they're going to ask you why you left i'd imagine. what you tell them's up to you but remember, your previous employer isn't allowed to give a bad reference.

Although what Jaberwocky says is true - the formal reference cannot contain anything defamatory to you, because of the risk that you might take the company to court - your former employer can refuse to give you a reference at all. If this happens, your prospective new employer may contact your former employer by phone and the truth will come out.
