Hi, my 16 year old son wants to train as a carpenter or joiner. He has applied and been accepted at college. But the course is for 3 days a week. He needs 2 days work per week or to get taken on as an apprentice and do day release.

We are going to do a mailshot to local carpenters.

Any other ideas?

3 days a week? that sounds a bit odd? Are you sure this is correct? Anyway my advise to you is to get onto the CITB (construction Industry Training Board) web site and find your local branch to see if they can help. Also try asking at the college. they may know of a local company. Please make sure your son is on a propper modern apprenticeship and dont let him join any old one man band. Also try joinery firms and shop fitting out fits. Shop fitting is hard work but is a very lucrative market and he may get to travel the world. I started out as a carpenter and enjoyed every minute (Im now a building surveyor). I wish him all the best.
