I am currently on a fixed term contract covering maternity leave. The contract officially ends July 28th 2006. There is a chance that the lady involved will not be returning and the position will be offered to me on a permenant basis.
Given the above date, what is the last possible date before she has to make up her mind as to her return?
Thanks in anticipation....

As far as I understand she still has to give a month's notice as you normally would if you don't intend to return to work. Can you not ask your manager? IF you're keen to get the job make sure they know that as even if she does come back, she may change her mind and they can give you the job then. Good luck x
Hope you get the job. If it's offered to you, ask if you can have the date of your employment with the company backdated to the date you first started with the company on your temporary contract. so that your employment is regarded as "continuous service". This could possibly help you if you are sick in future, or if you are made redundant as sickness entitlement and redundancy payments are usually calculated on length of service .
