What is considered the easiest language to learn? (English being my only language)

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.German is supposed to be closely related to English (same root, I think), and I know many of its words are similar. Put it this way, my sister speaks it, and she ain't the brightest button on the jacket, believe me.
Latin's quite easy, but of course, no-one speaks that these days, so it would be a little pointless.

I think the widely held belief is that Spanish is the easiest second language to learn for an English speaker.
There are actually a lot of similarities in a lot of words between Spanish and English, although the spelling is slightly different and pronunciation very different. Spanish grammar and pronunciation follows very simple rules generally though, and so is relatively simple to learn.

It's easy to learn a second language if you're living in the country which speaks it. Your brain just takes it all in like any kid learning his/her first language. English is considered the easiest language to learn to speak though spelling isn't too easy. I'd say learning spanish as a second language is worthwhile if you want to travel.
