Why is it so hard to find a job as a College Student?

My mum is having some financial difficulties at the moment and i'm trying to find a part-time job to help her and me survive

Yes she gets Child Benefit stuff but that and the money from her job only covers paying the bills and buying food
I need money to cover my college expenses etc...

I've already applied at 3 different places, no luck

I've never had a proper job before only work placements, why is it so DIFFICULT! No wonder some people live off benefits, it's easier

Does anyone know what type of job a person like me should go for? Apart from a paper round, that pays peanuts!

What about your local supermarket eg ASDA

They have various jobs

I got a job in a local gift shop and cafe when I was 17 - paid minimum wage, but was enought ot get by. I know some hight street shops (like woolworths, boots etc) employ school age staff over 16.

hi vintageglam - give answer bank a chance, sometimes you don't get responses because people haven't got any suggestions! we're all old-timers compared to your youthful 17 years, and have probably forgotten what it was like to be a teenager!

another option for you are fast food restaurants and coffee shops. good luck in your search, i'm sure you'll find something soon.

I saw in my local Argos the other day a poster up advertising for temporary staff ready for Christmas, I know it might only lead to a temp job, but it might lead onto something permanent and even if it doesn't you would then have experience. Don't give up looking, my son aged 18 tried for ages before he got something. I know you want to help your Mum out now, but be patient and as long as you go in with the right attitude, something will turn up.

I had to work all the way through university and it was really difficult. I started my first cleaning job when I was 15. I just took any jobs I could get like cleaning, working as a waitresse in an italian resteruant and making myself be so good they always offered me extra work and free food. At the same time I worked in a outdoor shop and I always worked over christmas for agencies because no one else wants to work at that time of year.
Once you get youre first jobs, even if it only pays �4.00 an hour other employers/agencies will see you are responsible and more offers will come along.
Dont give up and take any job you can. I really admire you for wanting to help your mum.
Im sure you will get something soon.

go for a job in a supermarket. I dont know which ones you've been applyingt to but the big ones certainly take 17 year olds, as do the local ones like the co-op. Glass colector in a pub? local shops? What about macdonalds or cleaning jobs? What about employment agaencies on temporary factory work? Care agaencies?

vintage please don't be so impatient. You posted your question at 1226 and were ready to give up 3 hours later. Remember that a lot of people on AB work during the day and most people use it in the evening. The experiences of my own children tel me that you have to be prepared to put in quite a bit of legwork to get a job.

My son worked as a Lifeguard at the local leisure centre. naturally this would depend on your abilities to pass the NLA qualification (which some centers pay for if you pass the probationary training period.) They also employ people to help in the leisure centre esp. weekends and holidays with activities (like footie) for children and childrens parties

Not quite sure what your age is, however, as you are studying you want to make a bit of cash but for working time to be a bit flexible??
When i was studying i got hold of the local council (doesnt just have to be council tho) and got involved with stuffing envelopes, stapling, folding mailouts etc. not sure if all councils do it but its cheaper for them to pay someone like you or i say �5-�6 an hour than to send it to a company to do...as long as you dont take too long to do it!
That way you can do it around your work etc or in front of the TV. They drop it off and collect it so the only thing you need is a corner to keep it all in.
Even if you local council doesnt do it there are plenty of companies about who still get their staff doing this sort of thing which holds their staff up (hotels, holiday parks, factories..in fact anyone that sends stuff out!)

So get out there if not and get yourself known.

Omg, i know just how you feel, its stressful. I mean, i only live with my dad, and we're having to move cause he has too much to pay for, like i wanna pay for my driving lessons and get to college without relying on my dad but the thing is mine can only be a Saturday and Sunday job because i'm training to be a chef at the Birmingham college of food tourism and creative studies in town and i'm full time there so i dont get days off cept weekends.. Hmmm i really want a job. If you have any luck, let me know. xx

Supermarkets, department stores are worth writing to speculatively - especially around Summer holiday and Christmas seasons. Join a temp agency and they should be able to find you something, although if you're only 17 and working part-time around a rigid college schedule, then you won't be able to be too picky in what you do. Maybe try evening work - bars, clubs, late-night supermarkets, data entry if you can type, or packing / factory depot work?

do try woolworths, i started there when i started college and even if you're taken on as an xmas temp, if you work hard and prove yourself you may be offered a permanent job. don't give up though.

Yes,It is difficult but not impossible.You can
earn many dollers by advertising,selling
products on ebay and much more.
