Has anyone got any tips on how to deal with work colleagues who take frequent sickies in order to avoid doing things they don't want to do? (So landing the rest of us with doing it instead) Our manager knows about it but doesn't do anything.

If your manager has a manager you must get together and tell him ( her ) this colleague must not get away with this your immediate manager is weak ( probably they are friends outside of work ) and does not deserve his/her job he/she is letting the rest of you down what a jerk!! - if you work in a large company you should have a personnell department who will allow you to use the whistleblowing route ( people who tell are protected from being identified ) they then will deal with your manager - I had a manager who bullied staff. I used the whistleblowing route and was successful however I did gather lots of evidence - e-mails memos etc - Good luck no-one should get away with having a wage and not doing any real work - niether of these two, the employee or the manager are doing a worthwhile job, they undermine the company so therefore are a real threat to the company and what it's purpose is -do all you can to get rid !!
normally the first day of sickness is unpaid and so why someone would continually do this is beyond me. Anyone showing any continual signs that they has attendence issues would be brought in for an interview as showing concern. i know that is what i would do as a manager.
Does you company not have someone who checks how may sick days you have a year and then assesses if they need to see the company doctor

I know in our company these issues (such as sick and excessive overtime) are usually highlighted to the Fincance Director and Head of HR and your Line Manager is then forced to justify these issues

Definately worth a chat with your HR department
Yes in our company we fill in sick forms (well in departments with decent managers) whether we have been ill for one day, two days and so on! That then goes to HR and they keep a log. I had a manager once who was hot on people taking the mick with sickies and because there was proof that the employee had so much time off she was able to conduct a disiplinery (which I am having trouble spelling). I dont mind people being off sick - but I hate it when they are throwing a sickie - it is just so obvious! Also, some companies, if the person is still in their probationary period do not get paid sick days! I smiled with glee when a guy at work was questioning his wage packet because he was down a couple of hundered pounds due to his sickies ha ha ha!!! My manager extended his prob period too - so it was a neverending story! I have never been stopped sick pay though (first day being unpaid) I guess different companies have different policies!
