Look at the link below - that says it all.
So, who designs this rubbish?
Who can we complain to with a view to getting them changed or scrapped and go back to a more realistic format like City & Guilds, or indeed anything is based on common sense.
It seems to me that the NVQ has been designed by educationalists, for educationalists, to keep them in a job. A huge money making racket, with copyrighted folders instead of an A4 pad from the local shop.
And, if there is anybody aho would defend the NVQ formats, (brave soul), please post here and tell me why you think they are so good.

I completely agree with you.

Last year I completed an NVQ 2 in Business Administration - what a joke!

I had to write pages and pages of 'Records of Evidence' which were basically me detailing how I switch my PC on in the morning, how I enter my user name and password etc

I had to get 'Witness Statements' signed by my colleagues, confirming that I was able to print documents and clear paper jams from the printer and many other mundane routine tasks.

And I had to take photographs of the fire extinguishers and fire doors within my office to prove that I knew where they were!

I have been working on an office for over 20 years now, I think I am more than capable of performing basic office tasks, it seemed more an exercise on being able to write essays on how to answer the telephone and I can't even bear to think about doing Level 3!

I have been in engineering for forty years, and in my present employment for seventeen, yet I have to "prove" that I can do what I do and have always done.
Employers pay the colleges, then claim it all back from the government. On a national scale this is a tremendous waste of public money.
I wonder if the audit commission could scrap it?
Hey! Where are the defenders of this ludicrous system?
NVQ = Not Very Qualified

A few years ago I achieved Levels 1,2 and 3 in..... wait for it...... "Implementing the IT solution"
Biggest waste of time ever...I agree that it's a massive paper trail.
I haven't even bother putting them on my CV. Far too embarrassed!

If there are enough disgruntled people suffering from NVQ related stress and anger, maybe we could campaign for a night of the long knives in bureaucracy land, and lobby MP's etc!

My wifes application form for a cleaner asked if she had an NVQ in cleaning - I kid you not!
You think that's bad..??

A janitor I know was recently sent for... wait for it...

Ladder training...

He had to have a ladder qualification in case he had an accident, so he'd be covered under the local authority employee insurance.

I kid you not.

Has the world gone mad?
Theland, I did voluntary work in a charity shop for a couple of years and was asked if I'd like to do a six month course there to gain an NVQ. "Why not"? I thought, might as well get something out of it as I already knew the ropes after two years. What a load of old sh!t it was.
I was given printouts that told me that I should wash under my arm pits in the morning and that I shouldnt hang my washing to dry in the kitchen because it would smell of cabbage! I had printouts that said "If a customer is shaking her head, this may be a sign that she doesnt agree with you, however if she is nodding her head she may be agreeing with you"
Who on earth is getting paid to write this juvinile nonsense?

Walking in a straight line, keeping your eyes open for obstacles that might trip you up, is termed, "Carrying out a visual risk assessment in accordance with relevant Health and Safety laws and company policies and procedures."

Yes, our country is quite, quite mad.

Wizard - Here is the mystery. WHO came up with this idea, and settled on the current format?
I'm going to try and Google it all later, and see if I can find a name. I bet his or her initials are ... wait for it .... N.V.Q.
Will anybody join me in slaying this dragon?
Need Vanquished, Quick!

Oh yes! That's a cracking, "Mission Statement," another bane in my life, together with, "Managementspeak."
it may be obvious to you, and is likely obvious to majority of people - but the evidence states that there are stupid accidents daily all over the world, caused by some ignoramus - you'd be surprised how mindless teenagers can be sometimes

and incidents that are inflamed by someone being a jobsworth, and dealing with a customer terribly

and worst of all, some swine who is looking to make a claim because if some stuipid mishap - and his argument hinges on the fact that he was never told or taught otherwise and it is not written in the manual.

there are entire books dedictaed to idiots having idiotic accidents!

there is method in their madness
I am doing a nvq 3 in professional cookery. The paper work is a joke .Bring back C&G.
I agree, they are so idiots can have qualifications and lets go back to 'words' as in 'City and guilds', there are enough abbreviations these days as it is, it's bloody confusing some times.
Question Author
So where did they come from?
It's not surprising that nobody has posted any support for them.
like i said theland - there is method in the madness.

perhaps they could stand some shaping up, but essentially i think teaching young people things that seem obvious to us, is no bad thing

i have had the misfortune to work with some young people who were so mindblowing incompetent, that it takes a course like these to bring them to the level of the average person.

i assume the nvq levels account for the levels in ability...

( i personally did an nvq 3 many years ago and found it very good, the filling in of paper work was very easy so not a problem, just did it - but in that time a mate was electrocuted by a miswired plug, i hade a tripod dropped on my head because some idiot didn't understand that you hold it until the catch is on, pots of special paint wasted to make a convincing cowpat, etc etc - there were all sorts of incidents of mindless stupidity ... and these people need ot be taught basic common practice... it is no use giving people a handbook and saying read it - 5-10 won't even open it)
An NVQ student gave me her "Competence" sheets to complete during her last week in placement. I did not sign the first aid section as she had not done any. Her tutor told me that as I had not seen her do any first aid incorrectly I had to sign that she was "Competent" She may be looking after your child! Tick boxes do not equal a qualification.
Question Author
I've done my job for 40 years, and the first part of the nvq is about my job - I can't fill in the bloody folders without guidance they are so complicated - but I can do my job! Crazy!
we dont have city and guilds in scotland yet i have gained some many years ago, circa 1960 when scotland accepted them, nvqueues, what a laugh if i did not complete some of this pish i dont get a increase, these numpties that sit at ther desks and decide what criteria we should have acheived havent got a scoobie, there modules go over and over again on th same subject but in a different format, what happened to good common sense, hang on have to to the loo, looking at a risk assessment for that one lol
Reachesme...thats a bit harsh. Its the format of the qualification that is at fault not the people carrying them out.

At what level of qualification would you deem somebody to be intelligent.
