University entry worries!

My 17 yr old son hopes to go to uni next year but on the open day he was told that it would be better if he resat his GCSE maths as they want a C grade and he got a D, he has B's in all the other GCSE's and will have enough points for his chosen course (building surveying). He is willing to resit, but is worried that if he fails to achieve the C grade they will not except him. Is there anyone out there who had a similar problem and if so did you get in anyway?

I have not had the same problem but would suggest he resits to get the C grade as he will find this very usefull when job hunting in later life. The extra bit of work will be worth it.
There is another option but I suppose it's a tad risky, he could try clearing: basically, you ring the uni and see if you can negotiate a place with the grades you have. Resit is a better option, clearing is also an option, the risk is that the Uni don't have the degree course that you wanted.

Good luck to your Lad.
I failed my Maths GCSE three times before I gave up! It wasnt until a few years later when I decided to do teacher training (and needed at least a C) I re took it. I paid for a private tutor (15 a week but worth it) and it made a huge difference. I passed easily with a C!

For many professional qualifications these days a C minimum in maths is important. They may take him without but its unlikely for the type of course he is doing. Only the university he is applying to can tell you for sure if they would or wouldnt, its certainly not worth waiting until the last minute to find out though!
most unis do look for a c in english and maths, if he feels he can do it, it may very well be worth trying for - good luck
