Please advise about Self Employment

Hi Guys, Been self emlpoyed since Nov, I have notified the hm and customs people and recieved some stuff back, it does say that I am to keep records of my incommings and outgoings but can anyone advise what is the best way to do this? I have googled it but it;s all so confusing!

Was thinking about doing it all on the computer and setting up a speadsheet (excel) but I'm totally clueless about what I'm supposed to write down! Also have been keeping recepits and stuff so it's all there just need a better system for storing it all!
