It needs to be big enough for the purpose to which it is intended, but should not be too big.

Good old mamjet.
My advice would be to ask whoever has set you the dissertation at your college/university. A4 notepads usually have a margin of around 2.4 cm. If you can't ask your college I would suggest leaving 2.5 -3,.00 cm to be on the safe side

You shuld have been given a handbook that specifies layout. If you haven't got one, go to your supervisor and ask for it.
