Does anyone know what staff pension arrangements are normally applied when teaching in private education?

At no time in the interview or terms and conditions has pension been mentioned. In the state sector it forms a valuable part of your package. My son refuses to discuss it.
I thought state teachers pensions wer paid out of council tax or general taxation. Are you saying that both sectors belong to the same scheme? ie you pay x%, the employer pays x%, and your pension is based on final salary? Is the private school being a bit canny and only offer it if he asks?
