50 & looking for work!
6 Answers
My dad is in the process of looking for a new sales job. He is 50 years old and I'm worried that his age is going to go against him. Are there any special job agencies that specialise in getting older people jobs? x

I enrolled at the local college to study Sage book keeping but the tutors talked me into taking an accountancy degree. After the first year the college found me a summer job for a local firm eager to use Sage. This was for 8 weeks but 9 years later I am still here. Tell you dad to consider further education - he can still continue looking for work in the meantime.
It takes older people usually a bit longer than younger people to find a job, but there are some companies quite willing to pay someone for their experience and ability to work on their own. In general a younger person is paid less but need more support. Small companies who don't have teams usually go for the profile of an older person who can just get on with it. Good luck to your Dad.
I'm currently working as an Operations Manager for a company which employs over 50 people. In my experience of hiring people I would say that the more experienced candidates need less coaching and development and can bring additional enrichment to a younger, lesser rounded team. I wish your Dad all the best.

it depends what area you are in but i know there is a 50+ speciality recruitment co in dorset called dinosaurs
they are really good
i used to hire 50 + for the call centre i used t look after - if you make it a barrier so will the employer... illegal as it is some people dont seem to care.
as long as hes happy and confident when going for the job he should be fine - help him research the company and role first and have some questions prepared to ask the employer.
look at monster.co.uk and reed for interview advice
good luck to him x
