i have just been made redundant ,how do i "sign on".Do i need to take utilities bills with me and i.d. like passport etc?

I think you need to phone your local job centre and make an appointment to fill in claim forms etc.They may ask for ID so taking a passport and proof of address with you may be advisable.They should tell you what you will need to take when you phone them,they will probably want recent wage slips too. My daughter's boyfriend was recently laid off from work(he's a plasterer) and had to sign on for the first time ever since leaving school and he was so confused and demoralised by it all.Luckily he is now working again,I hope you manage to get another job soon.

before you visit the job centre ring this number (the job centre will only tell you to do this anyway)

you will be able to register here and they will give you an appointment at your local job centre, then you take all your details with you.

i think if you have redundancy pay you wont be able to get jsa for a time though

But by signing on you do get your NI 'stamps'

if you've been paying National Insurance contributions for a relevant period you will be entitled to JSA(C).. the C being Contributory. this isn't means tested, so redundancy payments won't make any difference.

Oh yes they will, Sara.
Most redundancy payments are paid to include money in lieu of notice. If that has happened, Oldmanngrinn won't be able to get JSA until the end of the notice period expires. (Ethel's point about NI credits is valid so it is important to register).
