Taking a sabbatical - experiences?

I have applied for a sabbatical from work and was wondering whether anyone on here has taken one?

Did you get what you wanted from the time off and how did you find settling back in at work on your return?

i am a supervisor of a hvac firm in which someone did take a leave to better them self.
they went into a rehab and successfully completed and remained sober to date. they took it slow in returning to work only putting 3 - 4 days in until they were ready for full time. they are still seeing a professional for drinking and their performance is 100% i recommend it only if your ready to change to better yourself.

The only time I have heard of anyone taking a sabbatical is a university lecturer, who traditionally takes one year off every seventh year to write papers and/or books for publication.
