Student grants and parental contribution

My daughter is in her 3rd year at uni and I don't know why I haven't queried this before (just got angry about it) anyway I live with someone but only for last 5 years ie 2 years before she went to Uni. Anyway our joint income puts us way over the �35000 odd household income limit for her to get a grant but my income alone would mean she would have got something. But my partner and I are not married and I genuinely don't expect him to contribute to my daughter's education, especially as they only lived in the same home for a couple of years.
I'm finding it really hard to support her on my income as her loan only covers tuition and digs, Surely there must be loads of people in my position who were honest on the form about 'household income' and get nothing towards their childrens' uni education - or did they lie on the form or split up with their partners?
By the way originally before she went I made a phone call about this to our local education authority and they said all I could do was complain to my MP. Yeah right!

I'm sure that if you are living with someone in this way it should count as household income. But I'm sure lots of people lie/don't declare. Perhaps you could argue he's just a flatmate. It's annoying because married couples like our family can't lie and have to declare evrything and get nothing, e
