Whats the best thing to do about your NI stamp while at University?

Best not even bother about it.
When I was a lad, I conscientously thought to myself 'better work through uni to earn enough for my stamp so I can retire early'.
What happens? - 10 years or so ago Government changes the rules so males only need 30 Qualifying Years, not 44. Why? - because too many males don't have enough stamps for a full basic pension and income-assessed top-ups are being handed-out.
By the time you get to 50 the rules will have surely changed again.

Builders mate is right if you retire after 2010 you only need 30 years contributions. Currently the years you are 18 and 19 and 60 to 65 you get automatically credited for so that's 7 straight away! If you haven't got enough years as you approach retirement (which would be very unlikely) you can make voluntary contributions to buy 'extra years'.
