I quite fancy a job working on the checkout tills for one of the big supermarkets, ie Sainsbury's etc.
Do any of you lovely ABers here have any experience of this type of work?
Did/do you enjoy it?
What other things were/are expected of you when working for the supermarket?
and is the salary ok?
Any insight into the job would be greatly appreciated please.
Thank you in advance

when i was 15 i worked for kwik save {does it still exist}, i loved it the checkouts they were so much fun, and a bit of banter with the customers, and the money was national minimum wage back then, i dont know how much it is hourly now, but i can tell you that you will like it and you dont really need specific qualifications to do it, just common sense and confidence and a little retail experience would be essential. good luck.

I've no retail experience whatsoever, just office experience, so having none would that go against me if I applied?
That's what I fancy - some public interaction to help build my confidence up again.
Sainsbury's seems to be appealing to me at the moment.
I'm quite a large lady, so wearing a uniform bothers me somewhat, and having to wear tights/stockings too! lol - I've not worn them for donkeys years as I find them too uncomfortable.
I'm just trying to get as much info as I possibly can from anyone with checkout experience before I perhaps go for it,
So if anyone else can contribute to this thread that would be great.
Thank you
My friend has just got a job on the check-out at Morrisons.....I believe it's about £6.20 an hour............

Ok, thanks Mr K!
She's quite happy about it as she is a pensioner......23 hours a week, free car parking, and 10% discount on her groceries.
office experiance is good, and that can work for you, you will get the job no doubt as they are not picky as to how much experience people have, they train you up. Dont worry about the stocking, you will forget your wearing them once your into the job, opt for some trousers or a long pencil skirt or a long sharp dress to compliment your curves, the do have a few choices of uniform....chin up chuck

Yes Craft, I'm not after anything high flying either - just a nice steady wage coming in doing a job that I enjoy, that I can forget about once I've finished my shift and home again.
The free carparking is a bonus when you think how daily parking can add up over the weeks, months, years - all eating into your pay!
Dot is not a supermarket checkout operative. She is a specialist, highly trained retailer in the high value fashion industry.

i worked in asda and before that i had only every worked in an office for an insurance company. It doesnt matter so much that you have never worked in a supermarket. They generally go on how you would come across to customers i.e how friendly you are etc.
I have worked in insurance and banking but i have to say my best job was at asda!
I really loved it it was so much fun and so nice mixing with colleagues/the public every day. Most of my friends now are who i met at asda as its so social working in a supermarket.
Even if you dont like the checkout tills there are always other departments, i worked on a few. The salary is average but there is generally overtime/shift covers etc if you needed extra money.
The only thing i wasnt overly keen on was that the general rule was you had to work a shift either saturday or sunday but i guess thats part of it.
Im sure you will really enjoy it if you do go for it.
Don't you worry too much about being a large lady--the uniform will be made to measure as it were. There are some large ladies working in my local supermarket and very pleasant they are.As for tights , stockings could you wear those which stay up by themselves --forget what they are called.

Thank you Suzie,
but I'm not so sure about forgetting I'm wearing the tights though! - especially in the summer! - I'd hate it as I get too warm, even in these climates I get warm!
Plus it would take me an hour battling to get the damn things on of a morning! lol
go for pop socks girl.....
Having read the thread, I think possibly by the time you decide you might go for the job, fifteen 17 year olds will have applied and done their induction training and be into their first shift.

Thanks Brenda,
did you mean Stay ups?? lol ... Nooooo, they'd be round me ankles before I had chance to scan my first item! lol

Hey, thanks Pinkfuffo for your reply, most helpful.
It sounds as though you really enjoyed working at Asda.
I know I've got it in me to be good with customers, and know I'd enjoy being round people, it'd bring me out of my shell a bit.
