Should I take over my sisters job?

Hey, my sister has a job at the florist round the cornerbut is giving it up to give herself more time for her A Level coursework. She gets �25 a day and works saturdays. I have been given the chance to take over but I get nervous about things easily and am quite shy around people I don't know very well or people much older than me. I am 14 and would like to know if you think I should take over her job. The only problem is that it is on saturdays which is one of my only few days I get to have a social life between homework and school but I would get a lot of cash (�100 a month). Do you think I should take over or not? Cuz I can always quit if I don't like it can't I?

I don't know what to do!

I think in regards to what you say about being nervous and shy the job would be an excellent way forward for you. I am 27 and was very nervous and shy and I think doing things like working with the public and meeting new people will really help you gain confidence in yourself; and would be great work experience for you too.

I don't think you should let it come between you and your social life/homework though. See how you get on and yes, you can always quit if you don't like it.

Isn't 14 a bit young to be working? If I were you I would concentrate on having fun, on doing your GCSEs and not worrying about work. You have the rest of your life to do that!! As a compromise, how about just working mornings?

I think the job would be good experience for you.  First of all, working with the public will help you to become a bit more outgoing.  (Don't worry about your shyness; if you're that uncomfortable, you don't have to make small talk with the customers - as long as they get their orders, they won't care.)  Also, later on down the road, it will look very good on your resume that you took on such a responsibility at a young age; it will give you an edge over other applicants some day.  And florists aren't open that late on Saturdays, are they?  You'd still probably have the late afternoon and evening for your social life.  It's all up to you, of course, but it sounds like a good opportunity.
