work and time off

i went to work on monday and tuesday just like normal, my daughters creche called me at work and said she was under the weather and can i take her home, this was at 1pm, my boss said it was ok for me to go home asap. i had to stay off work for the rest of the week {i only work four days} because my daughter was quite poorly....is there some leave etc in place for this kind of thing, for parents or does this come out of my annual leave, i work for the nhs, im only asking because im not sure what we have rights to as woring parents thanks

Pretty certain this will come out of your annual leave or holidays, or you could opt for unpaid leave
Check your contract of employment or staff handbook to see if you have a Domestic Day allowance, in my job, and my last one, there was a 3 day a year allowance for paid leave for Domestic reasons which would then be included in any accumulation of paid absence like sickness.
http://webarchive.nat...//files/file41731.pdf is a guide to your rights. There is no right to paid leave and it allows time off to deal with the situation and make arrangements for care. Another site (business link) gives the example of a dependent being sick for two weeks and suggests it would not be right to expect to get leave for that period, but it would be reasonable to have two days, one to see the doctor and one to arrange for care.
The NHS does have a domestic sick leave policy as Dot's implied but it is at managers discretion and off the top of my head I think there's a clause that you can only have three days as that over the year. You are best off speaking to your line manager as I'm going back two years ago to when I managed and I don't know if there have been alterations to the policy.
