In such situations the agency creams off the difference between your hourly rate and that of directly contracted employees (plus a bit more). Unfortunately, in jobs with very high staff turnovers (such as call centres) this tends to be the norm. 8 years ago, after three years in the same job, I managed to get a contract with the company directly, resulting in an immediate 25% increase in pay.
well poodicat, its a long story, wen we started he was an analyst, and i was data analyst supporter, then after 3 months our role changed to helpdesk role and everyone did exact the same work. i did had a word with my manager and he understood it, but he said he did had a word with the analyst whether they were happy to drop their rate, but obviously the analyst said they would quit, as the company couldnt afford to lose a such a good analysts, as they would need them in next few months again, they decided to stick with their rate. :'( although some analyst were moved to do proper analyst roles, this one just stayed put - he was offerred something more alot more but turned it down. now he keeps rubbing it in saying... i dont mind this job....of course he dsont mind it if hes getting paid alot more than me. i had a pay rise but he only increased it by 50p. i am soo peed off, i need a new job.

I've a girl in my office who's paid £800 extra a month to do private work which she can do during her normal hours. I struggle to do my job in normal hours. It's a known thing by management and since the management stucture is so appalling, I opted to be managed elsewhere and leave my job. Vote with your feet.

Yep. And yet my department is acknowledged to be the busiest in the directorate if not the whole place and the most financially rewarding... And there's just me to run it. So like I said, I voted with my feet and I know they'll feel the loss. I've got great skills and I'm taking them somewhere they'll be useful and I'll feel I'm doing something helpful. I love my team but sometimes you have to stand on principal... IE management team won't give a monkeys but I feel better about refusing to take the rubbish any more.
I have no partner to support me, I support myself. And there's always a choice. You just might not like the choices given. All I've done is gone a sideways move. I'll get no more money than I do now and I'll still be a PA (which I like) but I've taken a stance on what I believe. Frankly if someone offered me £800 a month to do bog all really during my normal hours (because I'm just not that busy) I'd jump at it... but I would expect management to stop it. They haven't and they've also not done a lot of other things, so I left them. My choice was based completely on their incompetence and I've said as much in notice letter, I've done nothing extra ordinary.
