What should i do?

I have been a KP at the pub in which i work but have recently (2-3 months ago) started training as a chef, My boss has asked me to do my first cheffing shift on my own this Saturday lunchtime, when she asked me if i would do the shift, i asked her if my wage would be increased for it (I am currently on minimum wage - £3.57 for the position of KP) to which she replied that my wage would not be increased and she seemed surprised that i even asked! I personally feel that considering i am doing the job of a chef on Saturday as well as the job of KP on the same shift i should be paid at least something extra. She gave me the option to not do the shift when i expressed my unhappiness toward her decision. I have since told her that i would do the shift but, it is not to happen again, i.e. next time they want me to do cheffing on my own, i want to be on a chefs wage, i thought that this time, i would do it as a favour. :-) today, my other boss asked for a chat about the issue and lectured me on the way they are so generous and how the sun shines out of his s0dding @rse! all they could do is defend themselves and claim that they are doing me a favour by training me as a chef in the first place, when its actually me doing them a favour, i work for £3.57 with another chef while also doing the job of a KP, so....I'm actually quite cheap to employ! they have said, they might cancel the Saturday lunch service because i have expressed my opinion of the matter. now i am left indecisive, in one way, i dont want to let it affect me but then in another, i just want to tell them to shove the job up their @rse! I really dont know what to do, i dont want them to think that they can take advantage of me. :-(

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.Personally I would look around for another job while you KP where you are - we used to have a pub up the road from there and it was really hard to get a KP so your skills are probably in demand. I think they are taking the p$ss. Let them cancel the Saturday lunch - they have far more to lose than you do (3 or 4 hours x £3.57 compared to the money they could take). They are using the fact that you want to train to be a chef to mess you around. Hope this helps, good luck.
I feel for you. So many sodding companies are taking liberties. I work for Shell, They are just the same.
I would say if you need the job really badly then I'm afraid probs best to try hang onto it and I realise how hard this is when you wanna tell em where to shove it so bad. I'm in exactly the same situation.
All I can say is learn from it and in your next job lay down the law more from the start.

1) What is the lowest rate the chef would be on?
2) Ask them what period of time would be expected for you to complete the chef training.
Also explain that you are protecting your future, and that it is only fair that the elevated position shares more responsibilities with probably more work.

thanx for all your answers, yes im 16 karma22, im just fed up of them treating me like a kid, yet they still trust me to chef on my own, it doesnt make sense. Sherrard, was the chef, errr, how do i put it..... quite large? if he wasn't then it was me. lol. I have been looking on Jobcentre online for a new job so hopefully i will find something, otherwise, im gonna have to sort it out with my current boss's :-(
Hi Benny, I've no experience in your field and you are being paid a bloody pittance for what you do but if I was you, I wouldn't cut off my nose to spite my face. Tell your boss that it isn't physically possible to chef and KP at the same time, you'd be happy to do either for the same money but you can't do both, let them decide. If they decide that you should be the chef then forget about the money and cook your @rse off, enjoy and learn from the experience and big it up on your C.V. when you apply for a job with somebody who will appreciate your abilities and pay you accordingly.

yeh, that is the guy who is training me, hes not always miserable lol, hes a good laugh! my family also think they are taking advantage but when i mentioned this to the boss's, they just tried to defend themselves and claim that they wouldn't take advantage. seriously, they think they are the best people in the world to work for! i beg to differ!
Thanx Geemac, i see what you mean but i just cant get through to them, they seem to just think they can use me willy nilly! even cheffing, i wouldn't be happy on £3.57, thats a p1sstake, the other chef is on something like £10.00 an hour, the only difference between us is age and experience, but at the end of the day, we are doing the same job!
