Request for alternative interview date

I have been called for an interview next Friday, but I am booked on a flight to Portugal that day. I have asked if I could attend on another day as I don't want to cancel my holiday. Do they have to give me an alternative day or can they just say 'tough - you can't attend so you're out of the running'? I haven't heard back from them yet, so fingers crossed they give me another day.

Yours is a perfectly reasonable request.

they can say "tough, you are out of the running" if they like. they might do this if they have lots of good candidates for example When we are arranging interviews at my work, getting the interviewers together, plus a free room is incredibly difficult, so we wouldn't be able to offer an alternate date to anyone

Thanks to you all for your comments. I've now heard from them and they've offered me Thursday instead. Fingers crossed I get the job!

Make sure that you thank them for re-arranging, as it's not always easy to do and they'll appreciate it. As Bednobs as already hinted, it can be tricky getting an interview panel and suitable rooms together at the same time.
