I am taking my 17 year old son to an interview tomorrow for an apprenticeship with british gas, now I want him to wear a tie with his suit but he says that is old fashioned and he wants to go open collared, what do you guys think, have things changed, as when I was going to interviews ( a long time ago) you allways wore a tie, is it acceptable these days not to wear a tie.
I know its not an office job but I allways thought if you were going to an interview first impressions go a long way, even if it is for a manual / technical job.
Thanks.
You can be smart without a suit - for example, Freddie Mercury, Bill Gates, Michael Stipe all look(ed) immaculate when not in suits. The point is, for an interview, looking smart is only half the battle - you need to be formal as well as smart.
LOL R1, he has no piercings, tattoos or face jewelry and his hair is tidy (compared to some 17 year olds I see).
Tha thing is he went to his prom on saturday night and he wore the works for that and still had it all on when he got home.
He s due in from rugby training soon I will tell him what you all think.
Thanks.
point is though, given the amount of people on here who thinks its good to wear a tie, chances are the interviewer will think the same...so why take the chance?
no-one will think thw other way round
i know he's already agreed but i meant to post this last night :)
there seems to be 2 opinions here, with the young people thinking it's ok, and the maturer people thinking it's not ok (not to wear a tie) I suppose it'll come down to how old the person interviewing him is!
He wore the tie and looked very smart, interview and test went well, just got to wait now for them to let him know if he got it or not, they said it will take about 2 weeks.
Again thank you all for your input.
good for him. Sure, he may never need to wear a tie if he gets the job; but wearing one to the interview makes it look as though he cares and is prepared to take trouble to give a good impression - which will give him an edge over candidates who don't. Good luck!
