If you do then yes they can, it;s call asking staff to be flexible and cooperative to support the team and undertand the needs of the business.
If the staff member has a hospital appointment and has pre-arranged to change/alter their own shift then their manager would probably not ask them, but someone will have had toi change their Sugar to cover that person's absence for the appointment and so I see no difference. Everyone has a family life and everyone is entitled to say no, but an employer should be able to expect reliability, flexanolity and committment from the staff, in return staff should work arond their personal circmstances so as not to impact adversly on a business.
No absolutely not, why do you think they can dismiss you because you are not available to swap a shift? If at interview you stressed that you were flexible and you usally are then letting them down as aone off should not be a problem, the boss may nor forget it though and may refuse to accomodate a later request from you to change shifts.
Agree with Dot on this - it should be about a bit of give and take on both sides. If it all take by the employer and no give, you should be reminding your supervisor about it.
