I suppose this is the right section for this - - its just a little niggle that I have & I know some others have it too.
Why is it some don't know what 'There' to use? i know there are several but did your English teacher let you leave before getting it right?

i know which one to use, but often if typing very quickly and just trying to get out whats in my head many words will just be the wrong one lol

I sometimes use the wrong one in error, sorry!

I however find the use of "would of /could of /should of way more annoying instead of the correct would have/ could have/ should have.

It really annoys me too, but then I'm a bit pedantic about spelling anyway.:-/

There's too much laziness with spelling and grammar these days, I'm sure 'textspeak' will be taught in schools soon!

Agree with you entirely jemisa, but I would also argue (being a grammar pedant) with your "what" - I would say "why is that some don't know which "there" to use".

I get very fed up - not with you - but with the modern trend to say "that" instead of "which" - the one that I use, the train that I catch. I was taught to say "which" - this is the hairbrush which I use.

if I'm typing quickly I sometimes put wrong one but doesnt mean I dont know which one to use. My mate always puts to no matter in what context, I've explianed to her about 'too' but she says she was never good at school and isnt good with reading or writing. So I guess you'll just have to live with that fact, that not everyone had a good education.

Sorry 4get, but that to me says laziness on your friend's part. If you've explained the differences between two, to and too and she got it, yet still refuses to use the correct one....

no I dont think she did get it. And she's in no way lazy, she helps out with reading at the school to help her reading as such

I know perfectly well how to spell and the right 'their' or 'their' but type so quickly that my fingers are often ahead of my brain. I type the most ridiculous things sometimes. Almost like predictive text!!

So I think people can be forgiven for using wrong spellings etc. on here. I actually was extremely good at English and hope I still am.

See what I mean. The brain said 'their' or 'there', the fingers did otherwise. I am sure it is more of a problem with really fast typists. My fingers go like the wind and I'm also a touch typist so I am often not even looking at the screen whilst I type.

I used to work with a lady who said "We was.." instead of "We were...", for example "We was listening very carefully." That used to really annoy me!

The simplest way to remember the 'There' as in the placing or location is to think:

'It's not here, it's there'

noone mixes up here with heir

cazzz- the brought/bought one used to confuse me, even now I have to think about how buy doesn't have an 'r' in it (therefore bought) and bring does (therefore brought)!

I'm glad others have little niggles too, thanks for sharing.

Another I'll mention too is when someone is describing a word beginning with 'H' it is aitch, beginning with A for aitch NOT Haitch.
Have you ever seen that word game on TV where you have to find words within words? (can't think of the name at the mo) it grates on me soo much I have to turn it over.

Also 'of' and 'off', 'Your' vs 'You're', 'to' vs 'too'.

It never ceases to amaze me that printed signs - not hand-written, but professionally printed signs - can state "Smile, your on camera".

I was behind a van the other day emblazoned with the logo "No job to big or to small".

And I've previously mentioned (on this site) seeing a sign-writer's van which stated, in large lettering on the back, "all work fully gauranteed".

Now I know people aren't perfect, and the fact that the majority can read and write at all is great. But these signs are printed by professionals - does no-one read them first?

I am a maths teacher at secondary school and have noticed the year on year deterioration in spelling. A contributory factor is no doubt 'text speak' and email/MSN abbreviations.
Another very common mistake is to write ARE instead of OUR ("Mr Factor is are teacher").
And A instead of I crops up ( "A went to bed at 11 last night!)

I agree with Whickerman about professionally painted signs - in our town we have just acquired "Wise buy's". Oh, the poor apostrophe! Everywhere except the correct place! We had a sandwich bar called "Bon apetite". Someone advertising secretarial services offered "CV's typed very acurately" !!!! Would you employ him/her? I must admit that I'm a pedant but I'm proud to be one.
