Artists & Repertoire - basically a talent scout like Simon Cowell / Louis Walsh
the abbreviation is Artistes and Repertoire (that's pronounced 'arteeests') which shows you what an archaic term it is.
Messrs Cowell and Walsh are far higher up the ladder than a basic A & R person. This role is carried out by individuals who trawl the live band circuit six or seven nights a week, looking for the 'next big thing' and hopefully signing them first. The job involves stamina, energy, money, and a willingness to kiss a lot of aural frogs before finding themusical prince that will make your name as a talent scout. It's extremely competitive - no good signings, no future, but people do it because they love it. If you fancy this line of work, you should be pretty sure you'll be miserable doing anything else - that's the impetus you need to get, and keep, you going.
Andy, we know Cowell & Walsh are higher up the chain, but had I said Jiminy Bellybutton (or whoever) who sits in the Nags Head in Chadwell Heath every Thursday, Friday & Saturday night, it would have taken the edge off my answer!!
ps - neither the nags head in chadwell hth, or jiminy bellybutton exist as far as I know
