Which union should I join?

I am an administrator for a small charity and would like to join a union. I hope I never need to use it but have been meaning to join one for years so can anyone recommend one that has been good to them and offers free legal advice? Thank you.

Apology accepted, thank you!! I probably over-reacted too because I feel strongly about fairness and like you I think it is so wrong to label people trouble makers just because they want what is fair and just in what is often an unfair and unjust working world. Nice to have met you !

I wouldn't join a union - there are plenty of free interventions such as ACAS if you have problems. I don't know what bargaining power union membership would give you as you work for a small charity, not a major organisation.

Save your money, and don't join.

If you are made redundant, all the union will do is say 'Oh dear'.

I belonged to a union all my working life. They got people decent rises (even non-members), they averted redundancies, and they helped me retire with a pay-off. I've never for a moment regretted it.

I've worked since I was 16 and have never felt the need to join a Union. Hopkirk is absolutely correct in what he says. PS What's Andy Gilchrist doing since he persuaded the Firefighters it was a good idea to strike? Probably with his mate 2 Jags Prescott having a pie and a pint. Save your money - you don't need unions.

Hopkirk, If I went to my company to try and get a part time contract after having breast cancer without being in a union, my company would say "which part of Oh Dear! don`t you understand"?
