so here it is in a nutshell have had a job on a childrens cancer ward for a few weeks, today found a little boy age two dead , his mum had been told it would be a few hours and was asleep in the chair next to him.
i have worked in care for years but this has beaten me emotionally i thought i would be strong enough to cope with situations like this but not so. Have told my ward manager i cant go back. There are some people who can do this and i admire them but, im just not strong enough. Having a few days out and going back to care for the elderly. Yes it is not nice when they pass on, but at the end of 90 plus years you accept it. I cannot comprehend a 2 year old being taken by such a cruel disease

As you say, even if you prepare for it you don't know how you will feel until it actually happens. I know I could never do it nor could I work with the elderly, it's just not something I could cope with. I think it's a good idea to take a few days out and hopefully you will get over this, given time. Take care. xx
Hi zzxxee - I second everything that Jan has just said. I am so sorry to hear about the young boy who has lost his life and I know that this is not an isolated incident. I admire you enormously for having tried this job zzxxee and respect your decision to return to an area of care work that you have done before. If anyone here thinks you have not made a wise decision to undergo the training and try the role out on the ward then I defy them to make the same effort you have. I applaud you for trying zzxxee ♥

Hi xxxxxx, I am sorry to hear the sad news and I think you are very brave to quit. The work is not for you and you obviously want what is best for the children and their families, far better to leave than to stay because of what others may think. It wouldn't surprise me if you haven't got a contract yet for this very reason - your employers will have encountered this before when other people have realised that this sort of work is not for them. I think you did brilliantly to even consider this line of work. Hope you can try and put this behind you. x
Dris and ummmm - with respect, I have followed zzxxee's posts from her applying for this job through to being successful, starting her training and going on to the ward. Her posting today has broiught me to tears. Personally. I don't think it is a suitable thread for posting corrections on. Perhaps we can all just move on now.

If I employed someone...waited months for them to be cleared...trained them and then they left after a week...I'd be pretty peeved.
So the job is not for her....fair enough, like I said, but giving notice is courteous. Leaving them under staffed is not.

Ummm - little point in zzxxee returning to this job, it's not for her. I am sure the ward can find cover for her, in much the same way that they would cover for a sick colleague. It's not like she just didn't like the job, she has outlined her reasons and the majority of people on here understand them.
