there used to be a lot of silly and old fashioned rules like that for cvs and cover letters... the average person would not bat an eyelid to read I am...its about what you have to say more than silly rules...
its not particularly the phrase i am either - its more about the notion of having I I I I I I in every phrase...the 'rule' sort of came about as a way to stop...

yes ive had this problem...just a row of i ams running down the left of the page...i broke them up 'visually' by adding
i believe i am
i feel i am
you would benefit because i am
my experience at...
even i'm in less formal circumstances
etc...
format the layout too so that it isnt
i am ............
i am ........
i am .......
and is more -
i am ............................., and i am ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,..............................
.....
and also i am
its hard because essentially you are trying to tell them what and who you are and what you can do for them, so you have to say thos ewords...but as long its not really obvious it should be ok

Having recruited many staff over the years, I always appreciated short, factual covering letters similar to:
' .............I can offer the following skills and experiences:
- 3 years of operating within a financial services organisation
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office
- Leadership of a team of five service personnel
- (etc.)
The list should be tailored to cover as many points within the recruiters job specification as possible

its not particularly the phrase i am either - its more about the notion of having I I I I I I in every phrase...the 'rule' sort of came about as a way to stop applicants sounding self absorbed and went a bit too far...and it has kind of become a misunderstood and stupid rule...
people went overboard with trying to avoid it, and ended up sounding vaguely illiterate... and pompous...such as 'one looks forward to hearing from you', or looking forwrd to hearing from you... etc...its fine to say i look forward to hearing from you.
even down to letters written in the 3rd person or as even as though from someone else!...such as john has lots of experience in... etc
the letter is about you and from you - it is impossible not to write i somewhere
substitute it where possible but sometimes nothing else will do and dont be afraid to say it

What is the next word after I Am. It is important to know what comes next so that it will fit the sentence.
