Media Jobs
When you think of media jobs the first things that spring to mind are television, written press and radio, but over the last ten years media companies have been exploring new, growing sectors like new media and internet publishing.
Thanks to this, there is a high demand for people to move into new media, which can involve blogging, video blogging and video magazine production.
When it comes to new media experience isn’t essential, but most employers will hire someone who has a background within media as to avoid learning curves and training issues. In a more advertising based role experience is essential, and people with experience in marketing via twitter and other social media tools are highly sought after.
There are also many jobs available in the publishing sector, which involves gaining rights to publish materials, proof reading and writing your own materials to be published for the company. A degree in English will certainly help when applying for these positions, but if you have previous experience as a copywriter or just possess a firm grasp of the English language then you should be fine to apply.
Of course, in an area like media, knowledge of the sector is very important and employers are likely to look for experience rather than degrees and qualifications when it comes to employing someone.
Those looking at jobs in television, radio and press could try applying for work experience and internships, as these areas are typically very competitive and difficult to break into. If you have a passion for writing then write as much material as possible and send it off to media outlets. You won’t make any money from it, but it’s certainly a start when it comes to building a portfolio of work to take to an interview.
As media is an ever changing landscape, those who are adaptable and quick learners will find themselves rising through the ranks and assuming higher positions on more money.
With such a wide range of jobs available in the media, pinpointing a salary range can be difficult. Expect entry level jobs to be around £15,000-£17,000 and, obviously, top level jobs could be beyond £100,000.
