My father in law was diagnosed with terminal cancer last Friday and told it's only a matter of days. Am I entitled to take a day off from work to attend the funeral? I'm prepared to take it off unpaid. Many thanks in advance.
Sorry to hear about your FIL. It depends where you work and what their policy is. I would only get paid time off for a very close relative and a FIL wouldn`t be classed as very close. I was lucky to get time off for my Grandmother (who also wasn`t classed as close).
We would get the time off paid, but it depends and the best thing is to ask nicely. Regardless of what it says in your contract, just ask if you could be allowed to go as you were very close and he was like a father to you.
Sorry to hear your sad news, be strong and try to remember the good times.
I'm a part time carer in the community. My boss is very kind and understanding and I have worked many favours for the company when they have been short handed. I'm hoping they will return the favour. I've never had any time off sick or any unauthorised absences in the time I've worked for them since I had open heart surgery 6 years ago. Many thanks for your kind messages:)
That being the case, hotlips, it would be a heard-hearted employer indeed who would deny you the time to attend the funeral. Ask tomorrow so that you're at least letting them know that you'll need the time off sometime.
I hope all is as easy as possible for him and his family.
speak to your boss, most decent employers would allow time to attend the funeral of a close relative, father, mother, sister, brother, father/mother in law.
I once worked for a boss who wouldn't give a colleague time off to attend the funeral of an uncle she was extremely close to. A few weeks later the boss's female partner died, and, of course, she wasn't 'entitled' to any time off, but took it and the rest of the staff were very supportive to her, although she didn't deserve them to be! I think it taught her a lesson in compassion.
Yeah, when my mother died (1994)
the pit boss commented : how on earth do you expect me to run the works if you go (to the funeral)
and I said that I didnt actually care.....
and a sympathetic colleague said o that's nothing - you know in the Glasgow subsid, they wouldnt allow someone time off for chemo ?
He went around commenting - it is lucky I only have cancer - I could have something really serious.....
