After A Death

My lovely Dad passed away yesterday I've informed almost everyone I need to but I'm unsure what to do about his car, I have been unable to get through to DVLA. I am a named driver on his insurance and his insurance company have said the policy can continue until it ends next month, my dad has a will and everything goes to my mum, I'm thinking that if I send the V5 and a copy of the will with a covering letter to DVLA that they would be able to transfer ownership to my mum, would this be the way to go? Any help much appreciated

When you go the registrar you will find them excellent. You do no have to worry yet. They will help with all of your queries. I would advise you to ask for at least six copies of the certified doc.

PS. The will has to go through probate first. It is not valid until probate has been granted!

After Dad died his car automatically became Mum's property even though she didn't drive (he didn't leave a will). I took on responsibility for it and I became the registered keeper. I dealt with the change of keeper as you would for any other change of ownership.

Obviously I didn't have to deal with DVLA after Mum died, but I found that, generally, the bigger places that you'd expect to be a bit impersonal turned out to be some of the best to deal with. Tax office and DWP were brilliant and I'm not surprised to hear that DVLA are also good. Council tax, however, has been an ongoing nightmare.

Is she keeping or selling the car? I was able to sell my late husband's car without transferring the ownership, just by talking to the dealer. I also sold his motorbike privately, no problem, again I didn't transfer ownership to myself first. I am sorry for your loss and my condolences to your mum, its a horrible thing to go through.
