I have been told that if a candidate from the EU applies for a vacancy they must be given an interview, even if they live outside the UK and aren't suitable, can anyone please clarify whether this is correct ?

But that does not extend to guaranteeing a candidate an interview.
Some employers (under their own policies) do guarantee interviews to particular under-represented groups. But that's their own chosen policy, not a legal obligation. Such groups are generally public sector organisations.

totally untrue. Not sure about the “people with disabilities” bit but many computerised shortlist systems do not allow interviewers to know details about nationality or location. Once the shortlist has been created, then more detail is disclosed. The only thing employment LAW has to say about the interview process is that all candidates must be treated equally and without discrimination.
If that was true then all applicants including all the UK applicants would be guaranteed an interview! We are all 'EU candidates' no matter if we come from the UK , Bulgaria or Spain. Only an applicant from outside the EU would not be given an interview. It is a scam !! they would try to claim travel expenses if you gave them an interview! they are looking for a free holiday!
