I hear recently about a new legal minimum and living wage. What is the difference ? Which is the higher/lower ? Is it taxable ? What about 18-21year olds ? Is there an equivalent in the EEC ? Is it the same in London ?

National living wage starts from April 16th £7.20 an hour for workers over 25 years of age. All wages are taxable if you earn over the tax allowance for your situation. Do not know about the EEC . It is the minimum that it is legal to pay. It replaces the minimum wage for most people but under 25s and people in training and apprenticeships still have a minimum wage.

i would doubt it, as the EEC hasn't existed for over 20 yrs
Minimum is the lowest employers can pay. The living wage is higher than that

It is taxable but tax only applies if income exceeds the personal allowance (currently £10600 pa)
As I understand it, the 'living wage' is the wage rate needed for you to be able to live. The 'minimum wage' is the minimum wage rate that employers are legally obliged to pay. The difference between the two is the abuse of employer of employee due to underpaying for their labour; and which the hard working taxpayer is expected to cough up. Latterly it seems some government folk are misusing the term 'living wage' to mean the 'minimum wage' in the hope of fooling folk into thinking that they are doing the right thing.
Old_Geezer The living wage replaces the minimum wage from April.
Minimum wage will only apply for under 25 s and trainees.
I consider that a cynical name change by politicians. I doubt it is truly the calculated living wage.
