//While drinking tree sap does not immediately sound appealing, Canadian producers are hoping that it will be the next must-try soft drink around the world.

We have all heard of maple syrup, which is made by boiling down the sap of maple trees to produce a thick, sweet, golden-to-brown coloured syrup that is typically poured over pancakes.

What is far less well known is that you can drink the sap itself, which is called maple water. Clear in colour, it contains just 2% natural sugars, so it is only slightly sweet.

A small but growing number of producers in Canada are now selling this maple water in bottles or cartons, after first giving it a filter and pasteurisation to kill off any microbes.//

I don't know if it's available here yet but would you try it?

I'll try most any food or drink once, Naomi. And the fact that it is only 2% natural sugar is ideal for diabetics, like myself. The only thing that would put me off trying it would be if i considered it to be expensive for a soft drink.

It's all very well declaring it "drinkable" but I would need to feel at least that there were nutritional benefits to it. It's simply not enough to feel like I am "drinking the Canadian Forest" as I have perfectly good forest land up the road.

Not only heard of it, I use it all the time. It's very common in Germany & called Ahorn Sirup . It's good anywhere in preference to sugar.

Grape vine sap is excellent. I tend to prune our vine rather late - perhaps April time - and the old vine bleeds profusely and I collect the sap in jugs. Make dolmades with the young leaves.

The sap has no particular taste, just fresh pure chilled water.
