Sky Cancellation

We are in contract at another address until July, the problem is it is on the old HD boxes that are no longer serviced by sky and they are beginning to fail.  The occupier frequently goes weeks without watching as they say they are broken.

Sky have offered to upgrade us to skyQ for free but that would be installing broadband at a possible £28 increase per month meaning we would be paying £82 pm for basic sky and broadband.

I want to cancel the contract but wonder what the fine would be?

Ask them what the early termination fee is. If it costs more than the three or four months' bills until you are out of contract, leave as is.

Is Sky part of the rental agreement you have with your tenants?

Question Author

Its not tenants its my MIL, we pay her bills.

That's easier, then. Just work out the maths with Sky.

I know folk will tell you to contact Sky to find out, check contract etc, but I  suspect they could be after 4 months plus a few extra quid for pressing buttons.

I suspect you are right Alba.

We are paying for a service that she doesn't use because she is no longer capable of using it OR we are paying for a service that is no longer fit for service.

We won't know for sure until next week but either way we are paying for a service not being used.

Remind them it's not fit for service. I just hope it's easier than the fun I had when cancelling Virgin

I didn't shout or swear but I did plenty of both afterwards with a very large stiff drink :D

in my opinion, if you are paying for a service, you should receive that service, even if it'sa week before you are out of contract. if they cant provide that service, you should not habe to pay, and its up to them to either find a way of gettig that service for the agreed contract price, or cancel the contract with no penaty

Question Author

They are offering to continue the service by upgrading to skyq but because we don't have broadband nor do we want broadband they can't install it.

TBH she couldn't cope with skyQ anyway as she barely manages with sky HD and she has had it 17 years!

but at a higher price, which is not what you hae contracted for.  If they cant fulfil their side, they should void it

Question Author

True, Iwill ring on monday and see what response I get!

Have they made it part of the contract that you MUST have sky broadband? I have SkyQ and broadband from CityFibre.

Also just threaten to move to virgin and they'll give you a discount for two years.

Question Author

We don't have any broadband at that property, nor do we want any.

We got a discount from them at last renewal not a large one but the price rise recently have pushed it to £52 a month for basic tv and 1 other box.

Due to MIL having dementia she struggles with the sky box and watching tv on it. I would rather get freeview for the 1 or 2 channels she watches

sky Q does need an internet connection, so does virgin, so does any streaming service. So why don't you want broadband at the property?

Question Author

1 Because we would have to pay for it

2 She has dementia and it would be very very frustrating trying to explain it

well you could get a decent aerial and use freeview, works better with a Tivo box.

Question Author

I know we could get freeview but as we are in contract with sky at the moment we are just going round in circles

well the only way is to cancel sky, give them the notice they require. Then do freeview.

If a "solution" is not going to work as the present situation is, then it is no solution. Of course if they are offering broadband for free from here on in...

Question Author

Lol they are not OG

How long remains on the contract?
