My neighbour's 25 year old daughter lives at home with her. The girl has been in and out of work for years and owes money to catalogues and a loan company. She can't pay and they are now threatening legal action. My neighbour is a child minder and works from home, she has a mortgage, but has never had debts so this is upsetting for her. How does she stand legally with her house and her goods, if this all gets out of hand and bailiffs are brought in ?

The bailiffs can only take goods belonging to the debtor - her daughter's possessions.

They cannot take her goods or her house.
Bailiffs cannot come unless the creditor first gets a County Court Judgement and the daughter then fails to comply with the terms of it. If any creditor does apply to Court the daughter will be sent a Court form. She must then fill in on it her financial details and make a payment offer, even if it is only 1 per month. She must return the form within the 14 days stated. If the Court accepts the offer and makes a judgement accordingly, that is all she will have to pay. If she then pays it without fail and on time each month there is nothing more the creditor can do.

If she is unclear about this, she could go to her local CAB for advice.
