how long before a vehicle can be classed as abandoned on private land and after contacting legal owner / failing to respond, can you dispose of vehicle legally and sell it on more importantly can original owner then reclaim vehicle from a third party who has bought it legally? tricky and bit confused my self.

If the vehicle has no road tax then DVLA can arrange for it to be uplifted and crushed. Otherwise, it belongs to someone else. In Scotland there is scope that the vehicle could eventually become yours (by 'Prescription'), but only after a period of exactly 10 years, by which time, I'm sure you wouldn't want it.
You can send off to the DVLA for the log book of abandoned vehicles!
Most local authorities have a hotline for abandonded cars. Try their website, the process is they check who the owner is, then stick a notice on the car and then remove it. I had several cars that had been left stickered and the owners turned up and trailered them away in the end.
