How long do (home) insurance companies have to settle a claim? I have been waiting since July 5 for any information.

It very much depends on the nature of the claim - are you claiming theft, for example?

If you are claiming for a lost item, it should be resolved quite quickly. If you are claiming as a result of criminal activity it can take quite a while.

More details would help.

Hello, yes it is a theft claim. Seems I am waiting on the assessors and something about 40 days to process. However shouldnt the 40 days start on the date the assessors came to my house in August and not in Oct when they asked for a mandate to release the police report. Something I told them that they had ample opportunity to do from the start.

The delay is from what I believe to be due to maladministration and time wasting. As for the insurers, they have only contacted me after I sent two registered letters in complaint and requested an status report.
Harrass them. This "loss adjustment" delay is a ploy to get you to settle for a lesser amount, a few years ago my o.h. eventually accepted just 8000 for his WHOLE HOUSE of contents (insured value around 35000) because he had absolutely nothing left and couldn't go on without the payment.
i am awaiting a claim i made in april 07,as i was assaulted on my way home.
my dentist have only just received a claim form for the teeth that i had knocked out.
its a good job that i have a lot of patience.
