Private use of CCTV

I want to install CCTV at the front and rear of my property, what do i have to do and what laws will affect this? thanks.

I'm sure you have to put signs up warning people there is CCTV recording.

Oh and if you are doing this, make sure it's a good system and works efficiently.

Good tips for this in my experience with CCTV are:-

Cameras are placed not too high up so you don't get tops of baseball caps and pigeon eyed shots of blurry blobs.

Pictures need to be clear and usuable and not fuzzy or grainy.

Blind spots will need to be covered, some people can walk right under the camera and not be recorded.


Will the cameras work in low light or at night?

Is there any ligts you will use to illuminate the area at night?

Don't place cameras too close to light sources at night or you'll get the image from the cameras glowing and obscured by the light.

You do not need to put warning signs up unless it is a business use - however, if you employ a security company to install and monitor the cameras then that is considered business use and signs must be erected that also give the company's contact number.

Your neighbour(s) could object if the cameras are positioned in such a way as to point directly on to (or in to) their property - it is an infringement of the Human Rights and could amount to harassment or voyeurism. The police would certainly take action if a complaint was made.

and who can i infrom if someone erects a camera without signs stating that recording is in progress?

Who has erected the camera? A private individual on domestic premises or a company?

How do you know the camera records? Mine aren't connected to any recorder.

Are they pointing outside the boundaries - either on to public space or somebody elses private property?

i know some one who has a camera erected on their garage which points towards a forecourt enterance. The camera doesn't even point to this pr!cks garage/garden or house. So why he has a camera here i will never know!

And as for if it records ....... i will never know

I don't think you can use CCTV footage in evidence unless CCTV warning signs are put up.

As someone said, think about your neighbours, I would want someone looking in my house, and I doub't you wouldn't ether.

I have put 3 dummy cameras up and 2 signs, and it has worked, but people still steal, fight, and run riot despite cameras recording them...just look at all the programs on TV showing these fools !!.

I know there are cameras which you can view through the TV, which are great for identifying vistors.

My advice - Stick with the cameras, but think anbout the outcome, if you view a crime in progress, do you run out and risk your life,or call the Police.

ALWAYS think safety and ALWAYS think Knife...A life is worth more than a lawnmower or a kids bike.
