overpaid at work now they want it back

i have been paid �3.44 too much for 80 weeks at work totaling �252. now they say they want it back even though i highlighted it to various managers at the start , and then just let it roll . my question is do i have to pay it back as it was there mistake to pay me in the first place

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.Yes you have to pay it back and the fact that you yourself highlighted you were being paid money you weren't entitled to all along means you can't really plead ignorance and ask for time to pay with any real validity. Which is not to say they won't be receptive to collecting over time regardless of course.
Previous two answers are correct but in addition remember that your employers cannot simply deduct the amount overpaid from your next salary payout. Make an offer to pay back in equal instalments at the same rate you were over paid. At least if you saved the money you have the advantage of interest.

Hope you've managed to sort this by now but this is my experience
I had this happen to me to the tune of nearly �900. I looked into it and all the info I came up with said that they could claim it back. My employer did take all the tax and NI into account and accepted what I offered to pay, �25 but they did first ask if I could afford �50. They also agreed to deduct this �25 before any tax or NI taken off.
