my friends wife, went for a job at her husbands work place, they excepted the application then had her in for an interview followed by a trial day then turned around and said they dont employ husband and wife in the same work place. why didn't they say this before the application went in? they now say they have a policy saying they dont employ couples. also it does not mention this in his contract. can they turn her down on these grounds? can anyone help?

It isn't discrimination - sorry.
If they have a policy, they have a policy.
It won't say anything in the particulars of his contract - it can't list every goddam thing. An employee's contract is made up of much more than just the written letter - it also comprises the Company Handbook, policies and custom and practice attributes. So it IS part of his 'contract' - sorry.
They didn't say so before because they were sloppy - unfortunate mess-up, but nothing more.

I agree with the above two posts however another thing may be that she either wasn't up to the job or she didn't fit in and they were being kind and didn't want to upset her husband about it.
