tenant rights

We are students currently renting a house.
We are paying full rent untill the end of June, when we leave.
Our landlord has told the new tenants that the house will have had an extension built on the back by the start of July.
Can he build while we are still the rightful tenants?
We are all trying to revise for exams and it doesn't seem fair!
At the same time we don't want to kick up a fuss and risk not getting our deposit back.

This is an independant body who hold tenant's deposits and ensure that any final deductions are fair.
I know this as I am a landlord and I am waiting for my tenant to agree with the DPS to the deductions I am making so don't worry about making a fuss.

Further to the Deposit protection scheme. The landlord has to protect your deposit within 14 days of receiving it. If s/he fails to do that you can take them to court, the judge will order them to protect it and pay you three times the amount of the deposit in compensation. The landlord is also obliged to provide you with details of which scheme the deposit has been registered with.
